Job Description

Position Overview

This is a Teaching Assistant (TA) position which will assist faculty members in a variety of ways: cover classes and provide in-class critique; lecture in areas where the student is deemed competent; potentially tutor students who need additional individual help; assist faculty with class preparation (i.e., library research, internet searches, and PowerPoint presentations), record keeping, and supervised grading of assignments; and, other duties/responsibilities as deemed necessary or required.

Instructing - Teaching others how to do something.

Speaking - Talking to others to convey information effectively.

Critical Thinking - Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

Reading Comprehension - Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.

Active Listening - Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

Hours per Week

5-20 hours per week, Monday-Friday.

Department Specific Job Functions

CFAD Teaching Assistantships may be awarded by semester (16 weeks) or for an Academic Year (32 weeks).

Teaching Assistantships are dispersed as follows.

One-quarter time assistantship - works 5 hours per week.

One-half time assistantship - works 10 hours per week.

Three-quarter time assistantship - works 15 hours per week.

Full-time assistantship - works 20 hours per week.

Enrollment Requirements

Fall/Spring Semesters : All student employees must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible to work any UCO student position. Half-time enrollment for fall/spring semesters is considered 5 hours for graduates and 6 hours for undergraduates. International students must be enrolled full-time to be eligible to work as a student employee. Full-time enrollment is 9 credit hours for graduates and 12 credit hours for undergraduates.

Summer Semester : Student employees working regular student positions must be enrolled in at least 3 credit hours to be eligible to work during the summer. Students not enrolled in summer classes must be enrolled in fall classes in order to work during the summer, but they (and the department) will be required to pay FICA taxes. Student employees working FWSP positions must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours (if undergraduate) or 5 credit hours (if graduate) in order to work during the summer in a Federal Work Study Program position.

Enrollment Exception : If the number of credit hours needed to graduate is less than the minimum number of hours required for student employment, the student must obtain a letter from their Academic Advisor (stating the number of hours needed to graduate and anticipated graduation date) and submit it to Human Resources. Qualifications/Experience Required

Applicants must be admitted to the MFA Design program.

Qualifications/Experience Preferred

Preference will be given to applicants who have completed 9 credit hours of graduate coursework in Design and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
